Description

Mitch Mitchell’s Terrifying Experience Acme Underground CMJ

When Mitch Mitchell and his band the Terrifying Experience took the stage at Acme Underground for CMJ Music Marathon. We actually did not equate him or the band with Guided By Voices. They were one of my favorite bands back in the day. With similar short songs, filled with beat, non-stop rock, songs that will have you rocking in your boots, or shoes you will not be disappointed.

Who are the Terrifying Experience

After the band Guided By Voices broke up in 1996, guitarist Mitch Mitchell took off writing and recording his own music.  Mitchell went into the studio, recorded all the instrumental tracks by himself, layered the vocals and released it as a split EP with Illyah Kuryahkin in 1996.

Then the Terrifying Experience was born. Not too long after the record sold out, Mitchell wanted to take things a step further by recruiting an actual band. This resulting in the 1997 line up of guitarist Duane Hart, bassist Geoff Ortlip and drummer Mark Deane. I am using that lineup as what was at the Acme.

Terrifying Experience quickly followed with their second seven inch (first release as a band), “I’m Invisible” b/w “Legacy of Conquest” and the Search for Omega Minus EP.

With a local following developed in their home quarters of Dayton, Ohio, Terrifying Experience felt the confidence for a 1998 US tour. This was after the release of their first full-length Supreme Radial that same year.

Mitch Mitchell and his Terrifying Experience tear apart the rock paradigm, bringing all of its raw eccentricities into full view: garage, psychedelia, punk and the cosmic spaces in between.
