Who is Julian Coryell

Coryell began  his musical career playing the piano and drums at the age of 5, switched to violin at 8, then to bass at 13, to play and tour with his father Larry Coryell, and by 15 had finally turned to the guitar. He studied at Berklee College of Music and majored in performance songwriting. He went on to country music for a year playing with artists Loretta Lynn and The Osmonds until he moved to New York City. There he returned to his jazz and pop musical roots and worked as a session musician and developed his singing and songwriting style with his modern rock trio The Moods. By 1997 Coryell was simultaneously signed to recording contracts with Universal Records as a singer-songwriter and N2K, as a jazz guitarist.

Coryell worked with musicians Carole King, Jewel, Alanis Morissette, Aimee Mann, Dave Brubeck and Billy Cobham as well he toured with Madeleine Peyroux and with Japanese rock legend Kazuya Yoshii (formerly of The Yellow Monkey). Coryell went on as a producer and has produced Leonard Cohen, Jim Boggia’s Safe in Sound. You can hear his guitar on American television show The X Factor and Mobbed on the Fox Network.

Besides his solo career, as shown here at Rick’s Music Archives, Coryell’s band CAST! (Coryell, Auger Sample Trio) regularly tours the United States and Europe.
