Je Suis France came to Acme Underground for the CMJ Music Festival in the year 2000. They were part of the crew that Dave Lowery arranged to get gigs for the OnlineTV Internet broadcast and included close friends The Wee Turtles, also from Athens, Georgia. They fit in nicely to the Dave Lowery taste and play tight alternative rock while giving good stage presence.
Who Are Je Suis France
Je Suis France is an American indie rock group formed in Athens, GA, in 1997. Their albums have been released by David Lowery‘s Pitch-A-Tent Records, Elf Power’s Orange Twin Records, and Antenna Farm Records. The band has also self-released a number of singles and CD-Rs.
Je Suis France is part of the Athens indie rock scene as a mix of garage rock with crazy instrumental crescendos that keep your attention.The members having names for themselves like Darkness and Iceberg, their penchant for philosophizing about Eastern bloc politics comes from their worldly concert tours, which is why I highlighted their song “Germany.”, Apparently it gets the chicks.
They came together while in high school in Marietta, GA but really made it a group when they were still together at the University in Athens, GA working at the college radio station.
Their reputation grew in the crowded Athens scene, both for their artful songwriting and their occasional performance of songs in phonetically reversed lyrics, they found a home for their self-titled debut in 2000, which garnered highly favorable reviews for their mix of curvy instrumentals and ragged anthems. The similarly impressive Ice Age followed in 2002. ~ Matt Fink
